a week of mornings

I have always considered myself more of a night owl than a morning lark. As a teenager (and into my early twenties) I would stay up long past everyone else with that book I couldn't put down, or penning bad poetry into notebooks. Quite often these quiet hours were the most creative of my day.

Then I married a decided morning person. For the first year of our marriage, Waldi and I started work at the same time each day. Our mornings tended to go like this: Waldi woke up at 6am, went to the gym, cooked himself an elaborate breakfast, and was usually reading on the couch, when I stumbled out of the bedroom at ten after eight, in search of coffee- now!

Over the past few years, we've slowly started meeting more in the middle. Waldi stays up a bit later and I've started waking up before the very last moment that I absolutely HAVE to.

In fact, though I wouldn't call myself a morning lark yet, I've come to decidedly enjoy my mornings. I even have a bit of a routine. I eat basically the same thing every day- oatmeal in the cooler months, and homemade granola the rest of the year. I take time to drink my coffee while reading, prepping blog posts, meal planning or knitting.

The morning has become a slice of time to start off right- calm and focused for what the coming day will bring. Sometimes just a little extra mindfulness goes a long way...

I thought it might be fun to document a week of mornings in photos. Just a few simple photos of the simple moments that make up my mornings at this current stage in my life. I'd love to revisit this project in 6 months, one year, two years from now and see what's changed. Really when you think about it, it's these small and seemingly ordinary moments that add up to make a life. And those are worth celebrating in their own right.

These are the photos from my week of mornings in photos from June 1-7, 2015, in order from Monday-Sunday.

  3. I naturally seem to wake early these days but in my youth I would stay up all night. My family isn't small nor is it peaceful (well growing up anyway) so nights were my favorite so peaceful and quiet. But of course as I age I am loving a quiet night for sleeping not watching foreign films or doing yoga.
