Spring Projects: Embroidery

So I mentioned last week that come spring I get really into crocheting washcloths and coasters. Something about the lovely pastel colors and working with cotton just says Spring to me. Although I am totally a knit-all-year-round kind of knitter, I do love the fact that my projects and materials tend to naturally change with the seasons.

Another thing that I always pick back up in the Spring is my embroidery. Two Springs ago, I was surprised by the very strong urge to learn this craft and bought myself a simple kit from this Etsy shop. I made a beautiful wall hanging that still has a place of honor in our living room. Since then I've been experimenting with different projects and materials, and last year I started working on a template (shown above) that belonged to my great grandmother. She no longer embroiders (due to her eyesight) and I thought it might be special for me to finish it.

It's been a really fun project, and I've been happily working on it whenever I get a free second or two. But recently I've been inspired by the beautiful embroidery I've been seeing on Instagram and Pinterest and I want to try some free embroidery with a few of my own ideas.

So far I've mostly just got the colors chosen, and I'm a bit unsure that we need another wall hanging, so we'll see. Maybe I'll turn this into a little bag or something. Recently I've been very inspired by a lot of floral embroidery, so I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up going in that direction.

What projects do you love to work on in the spring? Are you into embroidery or cross stitch? If so, I'd love to hear/see what you're working on currently!

  1. Ruth, I have just recently discovered your blog "somewhere", and I am with gentle ease working my way through past posts. I am enjoying reading your words and seeing your photos, all put together nicely.
I love to embroider! I might even say if I had to place my handiwork in order embroidering would tie with knitting. Smocking on a floral robe for my daughter is my spring/summer project, alongside my knitting and sewing too.I usually have a kitchen towel or two to embroider in the warm months which I will gift as hostess gifts.

    1. Thank you Cathy! Your floral robe sounds lovely, and I love the idea of embroidering on kitchen towels. I may have to give that a try at some point. So far, I haven't been very adventurous with my embroidery and have only made wall hangings. I'd love to work on something that could actually be put into use. It's a great idea to give them as hostess gifts as well, thanks for sharing!
