Fall Fiber Goals

We're absolutely on the cusp of my favorite season and I couldn't be more pleased. To me, Fall is about coziness- country walks through fallen leaves and brisk air, warm drinks and blankets on the sofa, wearing plaid and handknits, soup bubbling on the stove and pumpkin flavoured everything...

Well...you get the picture.

Fall is also a great time for fiber pursuits. Every year I feel refreshed and inspired to learn and try new things. This year I've decided to set a few goals to keep me on track. I thought I would share them here to keep me motivated:

1. learn colorwork
This is something I've been meaning to try for a long time, but for some reason keep shying away from. There are so many gorgeous colorwork patterns out there and I'd love to try one of them this Fall. I've already got my yarn picked out so all that remains is to choose a project.

2. knit a cardigan
This year has been the year of knitting sweaters. I've knit two so far, and I absolutely love both. They're going to be major staples in my handmade wardrobe these next few months and they're also the projects I'm most proud of this year so far. So. Since it's been going so well, and I'm not only learning a ton but also making things I will actually wear, I've decided it's time to try a cardigan. I actually wear cardigans more than sweaters so I'm anxious to try my hand at this. Again, I've got yarn picked out and I'm going to be making the Tamborine cardigan from last Spring's edition of Pompom Magazine, hopefully with a few moderations of my own. More on this soon!

3. weave with fiber I've spun myself
Over the summer I spent some time spinning with my aunt. This is something I've wanted to explore for ages, and it felt so good to really start exploring and learning this craft. I'm really enjoying it so far, and though I at this point only have spindles, I'm working on expanding my tools and my knowledge. So, I've been thinking that it would be quite fun to try my hand at weaving with all these handspun mini-skeins I'm making. We'll see where this takes me...

what do you guys have planned for the Fall? Do you find this season to be inspiring and conducive to fiber pursuits? I'd love to hear what's currently on your needles and what you're hoping to cast on!

  1. Ah, fall - I love it too, but it's one of my busier times of year! But I do plan on finishing my first colour work project, started back in February (!). The colour work was not too tricky, just two colours, but I keep putting the whole thing down for weeks at a time. It will be finished. Soon. Your cardigan pattern is lovely, can't wait to see it!
